Nick Arroyo
Nick Arroyo retired from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2007 after a 40-year career as a photojournalist.
Today, Nick is pursuing a second career in sound engineering, producing state-of-the-art, digital audiophile recordings. Most of his recording clients are classical music ensembles and soloists whose credentials include membership in the Atlanta Symphony and other notable orchestras. His recent recordings of the Atlanta Chamber Players have been featured on NPR, and he has produced several commercial recordings aimed at the audiophile listener. Nick is also a founding board member of the Audio/Video Club of Atlanta.
Nick graduated from the University of Florida with degrees in psychology and journalism. Early in his career, Nick worked for United Press International and The Associated Press, resulting in his photos being published in news outlets around the world. He has also been published in major magazines such as National Geographic, Time and Newsweek.
Nick held staff photographer positions with The St. Petersburg Times and Palm Beach Post in Florida, the Courier-Post in New Jersey, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in Georgia. During his career, Nick had the privilege of covering every sitting president from John F. Kennedy to Bill Clinton. He accompanied President Jimmy Carter on an inspection of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant disaster, and was later reunited with Carter on a peace mission to war-torn Nicaragua.
One of Nick’s favorite assignments was covering the Miami Dolphins' “perfect” season when they were headed to the Super Bowl. But, his greatest reward as a journalist came from doing stories about ordinary people that resulted in positive change. Stories about deplorable living conditions in Florida’s juvenile detention centers and a series calling for better regulation of day care centers are two examples of stories Nick was proud to work on because they had lasting impact.
Nick and his wife, Martha Foster, an editor, live in Atlanta. They have three Dachshunds -- Phoebe, Esther and Johnny -- who travel with them in their RV. Nick can be reached at 678-984-1061 or narroyo@bellsouth.net.
